Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
HHH provides medical and mental health services to the homeless of Houston. Teams of staff and volunteer physicians work in a clinic that collaborates with a large multiservice agency serving the homeless. Primary care physicians are needed to assist with diagnosis, treatment and patient education. A once-a-week commitment is preferred; current Texas license and professional liability insurance are required. Dental Program: The HHH three-operatory dental clinic, located at the SEARCH facility, offers comprehensive dental services to the homeless. Beginning January 2002, University of Texas - Houston, School of Dentistry will utilize the clinic as a teaching site for fourth-year dental students. Medical Outreach: HHH medical outreach services include care provided literally on the streets and at homeless shelters. For those living on the streets, initial contacts may involve a simple offer of first aid, with the principal intent of initiating engagement. A chronically homeless person is most likely to come into a clinic for medical care if a relationship with a healthcare provider has first been established elsewhere. These person-to-person relationships developed on the street, at shelters, and in ERs improve the likelihood of continuation in the clinic where health needs can be met more fully and the causes of homelessness explored. Providers work with local public health delivery systems to assist clients in accessing further ongoing healthcare services. Based on programs in other cities, this plan has demonstrated increased effectiveness and success in improving follow-up care. Student-run Free Clinic: A student-run free clinic was established January 16, 2000 at the Lord of the Streets facility. Volunteer students from Baylor College of Medicine, University of Texas - Houston Health Science Center, University of Houston College of Pharmacy, and University of Houston Graduate School of Social Work evaluate and care for the clients' medical, pharmaceutical, and social needs in interdisciplinary teams under faculty supervision. Learner-centered courses have been developed by HHH and approved by Baylor College of Medicine to offer students the opportunity to acquire more knowledge and experience in working with the medically underserved. ouston Outreach Medicine, Education, and Social Services or HOMES is a multi-institutional, multi-discipline student-run free clinic program for the homeless of Houston. HOMES is an innovative and exciting new program in which the major higher educational institutions of Houston collaborate with community organizations to provide quality, accessible healthcare and social services to the homeless, as well as provide a unique learning experience for students from a variety of different disciplines. More than 200 students work together from the medical schools of Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and The University of Texas - Houston Health Science Center (UT-H) as well as from the The University of Texas - Houston School of Public Health and University of Houston College of Pharmacy. Goals of the Dental Program: To remove barriers to oral health care faced by homeless clients by bringing dental care directly to them. To provide a comprehensive range of services. To empower patients to practice appropriate oral self-care, through individual health education. CLINIC SUPPORT SERVICES Minimum commitment requested: For weekdays, one 3-4 hour shift per week for at least 4 months. For Saturdays, a minimum of once a month for at least 6 months. Volunteer shifts are mornings and afternoons during operating hours of clinics (see General Information above.)
